Torrance, Cal if. (May 14, 2007)- American Pro Volleyball League Tryouts, May 20th in Ivine, CA and Chicago, IL.

APVL Coach, Kris Dorn, USA Volleyball's Hugh McCrutheon & APVL Commentator, Robert Espero take a photo opportunity at the APVL tryouts.

We would like to thank all of you that made our May 12th Tryout/Practice a great success. I would like to extend a very special thanks to Kris Dorn and Robert Espero for their help in making it great experience for everyone involved.  It was great fun to watching Ryan Jay Owens (Greece), Andy Tomkinson (UCSB), Brennan Prahler (UCLA), Donny Harris (UCSB), Mackay Wilson (BYU), Tanner Sutherland (Pepperdine), and 25 others soar to new heights.  It was a great event that will help grow the American Pro Volleyball League into something special.  Victor Batista (BYU), Casey Patterson (BYU), Lance Walker (Pepperdine), Scott Faust (UH), Dan Conners (UCLA), Chris Komer (LBSU), Matt Komer (UCLA), Mike Rupp (UCI) and others are “flying” in on the 20th for our next event.  It should be monstrous!  You won’t want to miss it.

That’s this Sunday, May 20th at Irvine Valley College, in Irvine, CA, from 8:30 am-2:00 pm and at our new Chicago Area site at Carthage College, 2000 Alford Park Drive, Kenosha, WI, 53140, from 5pm-8pm. (For details see articles in our May Issue of Pro Volleyball News). And, we’ll have more throughout 2007, leading to our inaugural 5 team league in Jan, Feb, and March of 2008.  The ultimate goal is to create a group of 36 players that will become the core of 3 APVL teams. These 3 teams will play in the inaugural 5 team American Pro Volleyball League in Jan, Feb, and March of 2008. The other 2 teams will sponsored by the USA National Training Team. In addition, we hope to draw AVP players, before and after their tour. As with many of our events, the 20th will be covered with multiple broadcast cameras.

These tryout/tourneys are invitation only, and if you can hang with the best volleyball players in America, let us know by registering on our website: www.goAPVL.com and we may invite you too. There are a few slots still open. And we may be coming to a location near you. We are not prepared to hold an open nationwide tryout yet, as our organizational efforts are taking all our energies and resources and are still far from complete, but I've been asked by some of the players to organize practices and this is what we've come up with. Also, we have updated our May Pro Volleyball News online newsletter.  Please go to our site: www.goAPVL.com and check it out for more details about the APVL. We will keep updating weekly as more information becomes available.  We consider it a work in progress.

Thanks again,
Ray Goto

Brandon is going to walk on at Cal State Unversity Northridge. He still has 4 years of eligiblity left after this year. He is playing as a practice player to get the best competition. Playing for an undersized University High as a 5'11" middle blocker (39" Vertical), Brandon outplayed every middle he faced. I'm just worried that he'll be overlooked because of his size. Anybody interested?

Ryan Stuntz, 5'11", Lewis
He is considered one of the greatest liberos in collegiate volleyball history. Stuntz starred at Lewis, where he was an All-American first teamer as a sophomore in 2002 while getting 261 digs. He was named Libero of the Year and earned All-American second team honors as a junior in 2003, when he posted a school-record 275 digs (including a school-record 19 in one match). Lewis went 29-5 and won the NCAA title, but later vacated the crown for using an ineligible player. He made the NCAA All-Tournament team and All-MIVA first team in 2003, then played in the 2003 World University Games as the U.S. won a bronze medal. As a senior in 2004, he earned All-MIVA first team and MIVA All-Tourney notice while getting 269 digs. Lewis advanced to the NCAA semifinals.

Tanner Sutherland, 6'2", OH/L, Pepperdine, APVL #60
12-15-84 University Experience: Division 1, Pepperdine- on the team for four years. 2004 as a freshman started most of the year at outside and then libero. 2005 I was the backup outside and saw limited time but came in to play a little bit during the National Championship game against UCLA in 2005. 2006 started the last games of the year at outside. 2007 started entire season at libero, pre-season at outside. Awards: 2005 NCAA championship player of the game twice in the CanAm in 2004. I know that libero is one of the most important positions, but I think this guy could play outside at any level-Ray Goto.
